technical work - flood risk & drainage

Surface Water Drainage

  •  Surface water will be managed using Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS);
  • Surface water will be transported via swales to a network of drainage basins;
  • Basins combine / support a range of functions including biodiversity, recreation and improved aesthetics;
  • Some basins will be designed to be permanently wet for biodiversity benefit, whilst others will be dry and usable for informal recreation for the large majority of the year; and
  • Water is attenuated to reduce outflow and mimic greenfield (pre-development) conditions before being released into existing watercourses.

FOUL WATER DRAINAGE

  • A preliminary strategy has been agreed through consultation with Wessex Water;
  • Foul water is to be managed at the existing treatment works in Lower Innox on the northern side of the town;
  • It is expected that foul water will be pumped to an existing sewer in Handlemaker Road, which eventually leads to the treatment works; and
  • Upgrades to existing infrastructure across the town will be provided by Wessex Water, which will be funded by connection charges paid by the developer.

SURFACE WATER FLOODING

  • Parts of the site are susceptible to surface water flooding, which results in flowpath routes towards the River Frome;
  • These flows will be consolidated into 'combes' or cascading wetlands forming attractive biodiverse habitats;
  • A number of existing culverts will be removed / daylighted to restore more natural riparian conditions; and
  • Built development is to be located outside of the surface water floodplain.

RIVER FLOODING

  • The River Frome is an attractive asset which is subject to periodic flooding;
  • Flooding helps support a wide range of habitats increasing biodiversity on the site, but which must be managed to avoid impact on residents; and
  • Built development should be located outside of the flood plain.
